9th Annual Chistell Writing Contest Winners Announced

(PRWEB) May 27, 2009 -- Today Chistell Publishing (http://www.chistell.com) and Denise Turney, author of the books Long Walk Up, Portia, Love Has Many Faces and Spiral announced the winners in their 9th Annual Chistell Writing Contest. This year's poetry and short story winners are Karla Stover of Tacoma, Washington; RB Tolar of Union City, Tennessee; LeAnna Crawford of Milwaukee, Oregon and Georgia Freedman of New Westminster Canada.

Karla's short story, "One Day at Appomattox", is about a Civil War Veteran trying to find his way home took the first place prize. RB Tolar's epic short story, "Warrior at the Gate of Heaven" that recounts one of King David's son's battles, took second place. LeAnna Crawford earned the first place poetry prize with her poem "Blue Light District, Washington DC." The poem cleverly illustrates the sassiness and the spunk of the nation's capitol. Georgia Freedman earned the second place prize in the poetry category with her poem "A Split Second of Ebony," a brief revelation in what it is like to at once awaken.

The Annual Chistell Writing Contest is open to the public and typically runs from October through February. There is no reading or entry fee to participate in the global contest. Because she believes in the power of written expression, Turney has always picked up the costs involved in administering the contest.

"Even with scientific advances, benefits that may never be accurately measured are the positive impact that literature and creative expression have on human beings. Our capacity to express ourselves has a direct link to our ability to trust ourselves and remain open to the good in the universe. Literature shapes our culture, our communities - our minds. When you think about the power of the written word, the longevity of a story, it only makes very good sense to do this."
